The South African and Mozambican coastlines offer beaches and an underwater world of surprising variety — from the warm coral waters of KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique to the colder, wilder Atlantic at the Cape. Here are a few favourite spots for swimming, snorkelling and diving on a typical southern Africa trip.

KwaZulu-Natal

In the north of KwaZulu-Natal, just short of the Mozambique border, lies Kosi Bay — a system of four lakes linked by a channel to the ocean, fringed with raffia palms. The crystal-clear, shallow channels are ideal for snorkelling, and in season (November–February) loggerhead and leatherback turtles come ashore here to lay their eggs. The last stretch runs on an unpaved road, so this spot suits travellers looking for a genuinely untouched corner of coastline.

A more accessible stop is Cape Vidal in iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a pleasant waypoint on the route from Lake St Lucia to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. The beach is safe for swimming, and from June to November it's also a good spot to watch migrating humpback whales.

Mozambique

Just across the South African border lies Ponta do Ouro, a Mozambican diving favourite thanks to nearby coral reefs and abundant marine life — from turtles to manta rays to the occasional hammerhead shark. Boat trips to see bottlenose dolphins, resident in the area year-round, are equally popular. The atmosphere is relaxed, with no big resorts — more a scatter of simple dive bases right on the beach.

The Cape

In the Cape, Gansbaai offers cage diving with sharks. The local great white population has dropped noticeably in recent years, and you're now more likely to meet bronze whaler sharks instead, but it's still a close encounter with a marine predator — just a wetsuit and mask are needed, with an experienced boat crew handling the rest.
