Mozambique
Ponta do Ouro lies just a few kilometres past the South African border, and yet it's a completely different world — warm Indian Ocean water, shark diving and dolphins within reach of the boat. Mozambique is a destination that combines easily with a trip through South Africa.
Why Mozambique
Mozambique has a long Indian Ocean coastline with warm water, coral reefs, and far fewer tourists than what's on offer here would suggest. The southern tip of the country around Ponta do Ouro, thanks to its proximity to the South African border, is also one of the most easily accessible spots in the whole of Mozambique.
Ponta do Ouro lies just a few kilometres from the Kosi Bay border crossing, so the trip can follow on naturally from a stay in KwaZulu-Natal or a wider trip through South Africa. Zuzana knows the area personally and can organise both the border crossing and the whole stay.
What you can experience
Ponta do Ouro
A small coastal village surrounded by sand dunes and unspoiled beaches, with a relaxed atmosphere very different from South Africa's busier tourist spots. The roads nearby are mostly sand, so the area is usually reached by 4x4.
Diving
Around Ponta do Ouro, Ponta Malongane and Ponta Mamoli there are more than twenty dive sites, with visibility of 30 to 40 metres and water temperatures of 22 to 26°C. The best-known is Pinnacles reef, where you can encounter hammerhead and other shark species without bait, along with manta rays, sea turtles and eagle rays. The main season for sharks runs from October to May.
Dolphin watching and swimming
A resident year-round population of bottlenose and spinner dolphins lives in the bay at Ponta do Ouro, which makes morning boat trips to watch or snorkel with dolphins one of the most reliable experiences in the area.
Whales and sea turtles
From April to November, humpback whales migrate along this stretch of coast, which makes these months a good time for whale watching too. From November to February, sea turtles nest on the beaches.
What a trip can look like
Mozambique and Ponta do Ouro can form a self-contained stay focused on diving and the ocean, or follow on naturally from a trip through South Africa — typically from the KwaZulu-Natal area, just a short drive from the border. Crossing at the Kosi Bay border post, or a transfer from Maputo airport if needed, can both be arranged as part of the trip.
We don't work from a single fixed itinerary. Zuzana builds the programme around your interests — whether that's diving, watching dolphins and whales, or simply a few days by the ocean with no fixed programme at all.
When to travel
You can dive at Ponta do Ouro year-round, but the best time depends on what you most want to experience. October to May is best for sharks, April to November for whales, and November to February for turtle nesting.
When planning, we'll take into account whether you're combining Mozambique with a trip through South Africa, and fit the timing to the whole route. Detailed visa and practical information belongs to the separate trip preparation.

Every trip is built individually — it can be an intimate trip focused solely on Ponta do Ouro, or combined with selected parts of South Africa, depending on what draws you.
The result is a carefully considered trip with local knowledge, personal guiding and flexibility — no catalogue programme, no unnecessary driving.
