A trip through South Africa does not require expedition-grade gear. What you actually need depends on the route, the season, and the planned activities. Most everyday items can be bought locally if needed.
Clothing for different conditions
- Comfortable, practical clothing you can layer.
- Light rain and wind protection, depending on the area and season.
- Comfortable footwear suited to your planned outings and activities.
Mornings and evenings can be cooler than the day, so a few lighter layers tend to be more practical than one heavy item.
Sun, insects and personal items
- A hat, sunglasses and sun protection.
- Insect protection where it is appropriate for the route and season.
- Personal medication and the usual travel items you normally use.
Health preparation is covered on the Health & Vaccinations page.
Electronics and charging
Bring the electronics and chargers you need, along with the right adapters for the countries on your route. A power bank can also be useful, especially on longer transfers or stays away from towns.
For every day
A small bag or water-bottle backpack, a light layer of clothing, personal items and electronics work well. On safari, binoculars and a camera are a nice optional extra, not a necessity.
Handle documents separately
What to check regarding passports, visas and other formalities is covered on the Entry Requirements page.
We will fine-tune recommendations before your trip
Once your programme is set, Zuzka will tailor recommendations to the specific areas, season and activities, so you do not carry anything unnecessary and do not miss anything important.
