The most common practical questions are about what to wear and pack, how much cash you need, and what internet access is like along the way. The answer depends a little on the route and season, but the basics are simple: dress in layers, do not overpack, do not rely on a single way to pay, and expect that Wi-Fi outside towns is not a given.

What clothing should I bring?

Layering works best. Even in warm areas, mornings and evenings can be cool, especially on an open safari vehicle, in the mountains, or during the winter months. Bring comfortable light clothing for the day, a warmer layer for morning and evening, a light waterproof jacket depending on the season, and comfortable closed shoes. There is no need for special colours or a “safari uniform” on game drives, understated, natural tones and clothes you can sit and walk in comfortably work best.

What else should I pack?

Besides your usual personal items, we recommend sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a small water bottle, chargers, and possibly a power bank. Bring regular medication in sufficient quantity, ideally in your hand luggage. You do not need a large amount of gear, the exact list will be tailored to your programme, season and activities.

How much cash, and in what currency?

Most everyday payments in South Africa can be made by card, so there is no need to carry a lot of cash. We recommend a small reserve for minor purchases, tips, and places where a card machine or connection is not working. South Africa’s currency is the rand (ZAR). On a trip combining several countries, currencies differ, so it does not make sense to buy large amounts of each one in advance, we will clarify what is practical to bring based on your route. More detail is on the Money & Payments page.

What about Wi-Fi and mobile data?

Wi-Fi is usually available in towns, hotels, and most standard accommodation, though speed and reliability can vary considerably. In more remote areas, lodges, and during transfers, connections can be slow, limited, or unavailable. If you need to stay online regularly, it is practical to plan for mobile data too, specific options depend on the countries on your route and network coverage.
